WHAT WE
RECOMMEND
Make sure you’re standing
outside the city’s Clock
Tower at 7pm when a five-
minute music and light
show traces the history of
Chiang Rai. The show is
repeated at 8pm and 9pm.

KNOW THE
NUMBER
1262 – the year in which
Chiang Rai was founded
by King Mangrai as the
capital of his empire.

CHIANG RAI
ATV
Head for the hills with
this well-run ATV outfit
that supports a Mien
hill-tribe village. While the
company offers three-
hour family and adventure
drives, its most popular
tour by far is an all-day
odyssey covering 40km of
stunning countryside. Best
of all, it includes a plunge
into a waterfall.

Rest Your Head
FOUR SEASONS TENTED
CAMP GOLDEN TRIANGLE
After a scenic drive, you're
met at a small pier and taken
for a longtail ride before you
finally dock at this remarkable
resort. As the name suggests,
you stay in a riverside tent
(albeit a luxurious one), from
which you can gaze out on
Myanmar in between elephant
trekking or rafting down the
Mekong.

CHIVIT THAMMA DA
The colonial-style, out-of-town
retreat, perched on the north
shore of Chiang Mai's Mae Kok
river, offers a rather surreal slice
of England. You'll find a Mini
Cooper and Triumph Bonnevillle
parked out front, while out back
is a large wooden deck, replete
with twee white wrought-iron
furniture and delicate bone china
tea sets.

Bottoms Up
TEEPEE
Squeezed between two large
shophouses, what this grungy bar
lacks in size, it makes up for in
attitude. Run by an unreformed
'70s rocker, it's a chaotic mess
of curios, musical instruments
and wigs. Although Teepee
nominally shuts at midnight, it
usually stays open until the last
person leaves.

ART BRIDGE CHIANG RAI
This impressive modern space
promotes both Thai and foreign
artists, as well as offering a
great place to stop for lunch.
Art to look out for includes the
contemporary photography of
Tinnakorn Nugul and stylish silver
jewellery by Thanoo Phromyoo.
