medals in both skiing and athletics. Recently ranked World #1 in
Slalom, she tells us about her travels as she packs for Sochi
Interview: ELISABETH KNOWLES
I’VE ONLY HAD
TWO PASSPORTS
but my current one is
overflowing quite badly!
I FIRST WENT
OVERSEAS AT AGE 17
on a basketball tour of
the US and Canada.
My favourite moment
was running around
Disneyland onChristmas
Day with my Mum, little
brother and team
mates. It certainly is the
happiest place on earth!
Too much fun!
I DIDN’T LEARN TO
SKI UNTIL I WAS 21.
I was a snowboarder
and lived in Colorado
for two winters on a
working holiday, so
when I was asked if I
was interested in ski
racing I jumped at the
opportunity. I just had
to learn how to ski! My
first day on skis was at
Thredbo’s Friday Flats.
WE TRAIN A LOT
OUT OF MOUNT
HUTT NEAR
CHRISTCHURCH,
but if I were on holiday
I would head to
Queenstown. There are
a bunch of ski resorts
with long and open
runs, so I love skiing
them all. And the town
has everything you
need for a fun holiday.
I’M AN ALPINE SKIIER
and specialise in the
technical events. At
Sochi, I will be in the
slalom (14 March – also
my birthday!) and giant
slalom (16 March).
BEING A SUMMER
AND WINTER
PARALYMPIAN,
I love the unique
cultural experience
each host city brings.
Ultimately, though,
competing for your
country on the world’s
biggest sporting stage
is the pinnacle. It
brings memories and
experiences that last
a lifetime.
CHASING THE
SNOW AROUND
THE WORLD MEANS
I spend eight months
of my year travelling, so
I love coming home to
Melbourne. If I’m short
on time, I love popping
up to Cairns for a quick
getaway to the Great
Barrier Reef. I’m usually
in need of some heat
to thaw out!
